The Transformation of Operations in Health Services in Puerto Rico is Urgently Needed
Facing 2023, the Puerto Rico Health system faces several challenges. First is our census. As young people migrate to the mainland, United States, seniors make up a larger proportion of the population than we did a decade ago. Second, health indicators are worse than the rest of the United States. Third, the Medicaid and Advantage programs, both federally funded, cover more than half the population and face future funding challenges. Fourth, the island is experiencing a significant decline in its medical workforce. This is due to the migration of physicians to the United States, particularly specialists and sub-specialists, and, on the other hand, those who are organically retiring from their practices for various reasons, including age.
